Name: Allison Ortmann

Major: Journalism-Strategic Communication and Romance Languages-French

Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri (Kirkwood)

What drew you to Theta? During recruitment, I remember leaving each conversation with a Theta with this overwhelming feeling of peace and comfort. Recruitment is frightening and stressful, yet each time I spoke with a Theta I felt heard, seen, and respected. Each woman was passionate, welcoming, and I saw in them what I hoped for in both a friend and a role model. During recruitment I kept a journal, and I wrote down “feels like home,” under an entry about Theta. Theta continues to feel more and more like home every day.

Can you pinpoint a defining moment in your life? Summer of 2019 I participated in an exchange program where I stayed with a host family in Lyon, France for two weeks before traveling with other Americans. I remember trying not to cry and throw up when leaving the airport with my host family (between no sleep for over 24 hours and nerves, I was rattled). As the days went on I began to laugh when I messed up the language, I began to adapt, embrace, and truly live as fully as I could. We were sitting after a big lunch one afternoon when I announced that I felt like a cow. My French little brother immediately started laughing, while the rest of the family kindly told me I said “cow.” I told them that I meant to say cow, and we all laughed harder than I ever had before (Apparently the French just say they’re no longer hungry…). The rest of my stay they all would finish our meals stating they felt like a cow. I realized how easily humans can connect through the barrier of language, culture, and country with something as silly as a cow.

Can you pinpoint a defining moment in your life? At the beginning of initial quarantine, I didn’t have any school for about 4 weeks and was completely isolated from people other than my immediate family. During this time, I noticed multiple aspects of my health was declining. When I finally went to the doctor, I was diagnosed with Hoshimoto’s Thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder. This was a defining moment for me because I trusted myself and paid attention to how I was feeling and advocated for myself in order to get the answers I needed. Since my diagnosis, I have been focused on my health and have come to realize that it has to come before anything else if I want to lead a happy and successful life.

Major: Speech Language and Hearing Sciences (Speech Pathology)

What drew you to Theta? Immediately the energy of the young women I was able to talk to during the first few days of recruitment. Every girl had a go-getter attitude and was sincerely passionate talking about all things Theta. Along with the powerful energy of the girls, I was immediately drawn to the four points of the kite; specifically personal excellence and intellectual curiosity. These two points stood out to me because it was obvious how each girl I have met in Theta possesses these values through and through.

Where is your happy place and why? I would have to say that my happy place is definitely at the lake with my family and friends. The feeling of togetherness, relaxation, and comfort makes me so happy. I love being able to unwind and have no worries in the world while spending sincere, quality time with my friends and family. Name: Maddie Hall

Major: Journalism

Hometown: Dallas, Texas

What drew you to Theta? I was initially drawn to Theta before recruitment even began while reading about their sisterhood and philanthropy. I felt that our values aligned, and I saw myself fitting in well. During recruitment, I left every conversation with Theta feeling excited and like I had found where I belonged. When our schedules came out after each round, Theta was always the first house that I looked for. When (or where) do you feel like your truest self? It wasn’t until I started college that I began to feel like my truest self. You always hear that college is where you discover yourself, but I didn’t believe or fully realize that it would happen for me, especially not during my first semester. Being surrounded by my best friends in a place that I have fallen in love with has allowed me to become my truest self, and I am so thankful to Mizzou and Theta for becoming an environment that has inspired that growth.

What drew you to Theta? One thing that drew me to Theta was the diversity within the chapter. Not only are there people in Theta with the same interests as me but there are some with the complete opposite interests as me, and everywhere in between. This was amazing to me because even if we were not interested in the same things, we were all drawn to Theta because we all have the same values that we all share as Thetas.

Can you pinpoint a defining moment in your life? One of the biggest defining moments in my life was when I was buying groceries for a family in need in Costa Rica. This was such a defining moment in my life because seeing how grateful this family was, even though they had nothing, I was moved and knew that my life was meant for helping others. I’ve always loved the atmosphere of my favorite coffee shops back home, though, and I love going with friends to sit and chat for a bit. As for movie theaters, well, when they return post-COVID I will be the happiest person ever.

Name: Malcia Greene

Major: Journalism

Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri

What drew you to Theta? Prior to recruitment, a lot of my friends already pinned what houses they had hoped to be in. But me? I had no idea where I was meant to end up. As I went through rush, Theta always stood out in the back of my mind. Whether it was due to the charismatic girls I talked to or simply thinking about the members from my high school in house who I admired, time and time again, my gut told me to Think Theta :) The house’s diversity and welcoming nature also drew me in, as did their values and commitment to philanthropy.

When (or where) do you feel like your truest self? In all honesty, you can find me in my truest form when I’m listening to Hyperpop in my 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe. Driving through the suburbs of St. Louis while blaring my hometown hero, Slayyyter, or pop princess, Charli XCX, in a vehicle with 150,000+ miles and a squeaking engine in the wintertime is unmatched. There’s a charm to the Midwest and going through backroads while hearing Ayesha Erotica (another legend) belt out “Yummy” exemplifies that for me :p That, as well as That Kid’s verse in “Dial Tone'' <3 And not to mention Coco & Clair Clair’s serve… it’s queenery, if you will.

What drew you to Theta? In high school I discovered my passion for volunteering, and I was a very active member of my community. When I moved to college, this involvement was the only thing I felt like I was lacking. I was drawn to Theta during recruitment because commitment to services is one of the core values on the kite, and I felt as though the Thetas I talked to during philanthropy round were genuinely passionate about philanthropy like I am. This provided me a connection to Theta that I love and don’t want to lose.

Where is your happy place and why? My happy place is anywhere near the water - lakes, oceans, you name it. Most of my favorite memories involve my family at our lake house or vacations to the beach. I love to go boating, tubing, and watching sunsets over the water. Something about it just brings me so much joy and peace. I hope to live by the water when I’m older, but until I do, I recently got an ocean tattoo to serve as a reminder.

I felt like the vibe of the girls in Theta is inspired, strong, and empowered women who have goals and are all trying to help each other achieve them. When going through recruitment, I wanted girls who I could have fun with and become best friends with, but I also wanted to feel like I was a part of something more than just a sorority and I feel that in Theta.

Every year my family would spend most of our summer there, some of my favorite memories of my grandparents are there. The cabin just reminds me of summer, being tan, and spending time with my family.
