Meet MC '18: Part 1

November 28, 2018

We are so excited to show off our newest member class! These ladies were initiated into Theta on September 29, and we can't begin to describe how much they have added to our chapter! Learn more about them below!

Name: Madison Herweck

Hometown: Kirkwood, Missouri

Major: Nursing

Why did you come to Mizzou?

I started my college search early in high school, thinking I knew exactly what I wanted - a small, private university. As I progressed into my high school years, I realized I was missing something. There wasn't an excitement when I visited the campuses. These schools I had been touring didn’t have the same school spirit and traditions I loved from my high school, where traditions date back over one hundred years of annual Thanksgiving Day football games against Kirkwood’s rival Webster High School, decorating hallways in theme (like "Grease" my senior year) before the game, chili cook-offs, insane pep rallies, and packed football games, where everyone joins together to sing the Alma Mater. I knew I didn’t want an exact repeat of high school, but I wanted to continue to dive into a spirited, tradition-driven school. I found that and more at Mizzou. I found a university filled with family-oriented, tradition-loving students, and alumni who still come back to cheer on their Mizzou Tigers. The energy created by a group of students rallying together to celebrate, serve and pursue excellence is the equation for an amazing experience and education.

Tell us a few reasons why Theta became your new home.

During recruitment, I glanced around Kappa Alpha Theta a few times during each conversation. I was in a room full of such amazing, intelligent, compassionate women – the type of woman I want to become. I truly believe you are made better by the people you are surrounded by, and I knew wholeheartedly that Theta would have my back to support and push me to be the best version of myself and have a ton of fun along the way.

What is your dream job?

A pediatric nurse practitioner, hopefully in St. Louis!

The best song ever written is…?

Anything by Taylor Swift, new, old, doesn’t even matter.

Favorite TV show and why?

Friends! I’ve seen every episode a dozen times. If anyone would like to move into a purple NYC apartment with some other pals, definitely let me know.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?

Sour Patch Watermelon. I can eat bags upon bags without hesitation.

Name: Savana Spitz

Hometown: Dallas, TX

Major: Health Sciences (Pre- OT/PA)

Tell us a few reasons why Theta became your new home.

Going through recruitment I knew exactly what I wanted in a house; I wanted a great philanthropy, girls that were driven, and an environment that would encourage me to be my best. Theta had it all. Even though I have only been a member of Theta for four months, I feel that I have changed immensely. I have gotten involved in other organizations outside of Theta because of the girls inside of Theta and have met other Thetas through those organizations. To me, being able to receive experiences and back other organizations besides Theta but because of Theta is why Theta has become my new home.

To me, sisterhood means…

Being able to eat 40 chicken nuggets and not get judged for it. One of my friends back home told me that before I left for college so during recruitment I had this mentality. Sisterhood is being able to not be judged for who you are, but instead be treasured for those qualities. Although being able to take down 40 chicken nuggets from McDonalds is great, sisterhood really has become more than that for me. Being in Theta, I have been surrounded by girls who love and appreciate each other, and although there will be ups and downs, at the end of the day everyone protects each other.

Why did you come to Mizzou?

When looking at colleges I needed a D1 school, football & basketball, Greek life, and the opportunity to get my pre-req’s for OT and PA school. Mizzou had everything I wanted! Coming from Texas, sports are very important to me, so having a D1 school who had football & basketball was a must. I couldn’t see myself getting the full college experience without that. Having the opportunity to join a sorority was a huge must for me; I went to an all-girls high school, so I wanted to have a group of all girls when I got to college. Finally, most schools would not allow me to take pre-PA and pre-OT classes, but Mizzou was so accommodating and is still working to help me balance my schedule so that I can have both pre-req’s. I knew when I stepped on campus that Mizzou was my home and have never looked back.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Vail, CO. I am not an outdoorsy person at all, but Vail, CO in the summer is my favorite place in the whole world. Vail is a small town filled with cool architecture and has a village vibe. I love hiking on the mountains and taking cool pictures once I get to the top. Vail also has the best food (best chocolate soufflé ever). My grandparents used to have a house in Vail and would take my dad and his brothers, so it is a very sentimental place for him too.

Favorite thing to do on a Columbia Saturday?

In the fall, Saturdays are for tailgates and football. I love going to all the games and cheering on the tigers! After the game, I normally take a nap and then wake up to get Thip Thai with my friends for dinner (one of my favorite restaurants in Columbia).

Name: Molly Shumard

Hometown: Warrensburg, MO

Major: Biochemistry (Pre-Dental)

Why did you come to Mizzou?

My dad and sister are both Mizzou alumni, so I have spent a lot of time on campus. When I began looking at colleges, I wanted to explore some other options. I toured Mizzou and another school and there was no comparison. Mizzou was incredibly welcoming, and emphasized the ways that I could get involved and become a part of the campus community. I began to see their academic programs were amazing and had an incredible success rate in the field I am interested in. Two days after I was accepted to Mizzou, my parents found out they were moving to Pennsylvania. They offered to take me to tour schools on the east coast, but I told them Mizzou is where I want to be -- they were thrilled with that decision. Not once since coming to Mizzou have I regretted it!

Favorite thing to do on a Columbia Saturday?

One of my favorite things to do in Columbia on a Saturday (or really any day) is go to Andy’s Frozen Custard! The Tiger Streak custard is easily the best thing on the menu! Plus, there is ALWAYS someone that wants Andy’s too, so you never have to go alone!

Tell us a few reasons why Theta became your new home.

Theta became my new home because of the welcoming girls in it. Within my first few weeks of college, I was blown away by the number of girls that wanted to get to know me. Everyone was so welcoming and was willing to go out of their way to spend time with me! From getting coffee to saying “hello” in passing between classes, Thetas are so friendly and helped me find my home in the chapter.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is to be a dentist! I have always been interested in the health field, but was never quite sure what I wanted to do. My sophomore year of high school I went to the dentist to get a filling. After three numbing shots (with my mouth still not numb), I noticed that I could not blink. My dentist took a panoramic scan of my mouth and explained that my nerves are in the wrong place in my mouth, and she had hit the wrong one. This caused half my face to be paralyzed for about three hours. My dentist was excellent at explaining what had happened by bringing out her model heads, textbooks, and previous scans. While she was explaining the anatomy to me (while my face was still paralyzed) I saw how interesting dentistry was! I went back and shadowed her and absolutely fell in love with the profession!

Theta is…

Theta is constant support and motivation. In Theta, I am surrounded by so many leading women making a difference in everything they do. It is incredible to see people I know in leadership roles of their organizations. They are all willing to explain their roles and help me reach my goals of getting there! I have seen that whatever I am interested in, there is someone that is willing to help me every step of the way and celebrate my victories, big or small!

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?

My biggest guilty pleasure is definitely Andy’s Frozen Custard. I really have a problem; it may be concerning.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is to be a part of a company that does cutting-edge research. As an engineering major, I really want to make an impact on the world in a positive way. I want to encourage younger generations that they can do anything they set their minds to, especially women in STEM. Hopefully one day I can own my own company focused around research and service.

Favorite TV show and why?

My favorite TV show is Gilmore Girls. I grew up watching this show cuddled up on the couch with my mom and sister. I am super close with my family, so the relationship between Rory and her mom is something I relate to and cherish with my mom. I think it is overall a heartwarming show that connects you to the characters and leaves you feeling happy & full!

Tell us a few reasons why Theta became your new home.

Theta became my new home because when I walked into 603 it felt like home. I felt like I could fully be myself, and that I was 100 percent supported by the people I was surrounded by. I knew Theta would push me to be the best version of myself. I am so excited for the years to come!
