Meet Channing Phillips: Our October Leading Woman

October 24, 2018

Name:  Channing Phillips

Major:  Journalism, Sports Radio/TV

Minor:  Business

What are your career goals?

After interning with ESPN this past summer, I am hopeful that I will land a job with them. I love everything about sports!

What are you involved in at Mizzou?

Current - Mizzou Broadcast Operations (I do the SEC Network broadcast for Mizzou athletics). Past - MAB, Caring for Columbia (Exec board) and STRIPES.

What's your favorite thing you're involved in and why?

Most definitely Mizzou Broadcast Ops. I love being able to surround myself with people that are just as passionate about sports as I am. It's so awesome to see your work being aired.

What are you passionate about?

I am very passionate about helping others; I love being able to serve our community. I am a huge animal lover, and I love volunteering at the humane society.

What's your favorite thing about Theta?

Theta has given me a second home. My favorite thing about Theta is always having a shoulder to lean on. Without Theta, I wouldn't be the person I am today. It has pushed me to limits that I didn't know existed. I am so thankful to call myself a Theta and to surround myself with these influential women.

Do you have a specific favorite Theta memory?

Wow, that's so hard to answer! I have so many amazing memories! I love everything about recruitment, and having my little run into my arms is something that I will always cherish. It is so much fun decorating our kites waiting for the new members to see them! Followed by that, I love attending our sisterhood events during inspiration week. I really love getting to know everyone in each member class!

What do you do in your free time?

It's very rare that I have free time, but when I do, I love spending time with the friends that Theta has given me. A big bowl of popcorn with a movie is the best way to go!

Can you tell us about your recent trip to China?

I recently went to Beijing, China to intern for the China Open. It's the largest WTA/ATP tennis tournament in China. We had 7 students and 1 professor. During the tournament, we covered specific matches each day and wrote a follow-up story on that match. We even got one-on-one interviews with some of the players after their matches, which was super cool! We got to attend press conferences and had a specific media credential to attend the matches. It was so cool being able to interact with the other media team and the players. I definitely gained writing experience being able to report on tennis for first time. It was an eye-opening trip that changed my perspective on the role of journalism.

Anything else you'd like to add?

To current Theta's and future Theta's, don't be afraid to ask your sisters for advice. I wouldn't have gone on this amazing trip to China, if it weren't for calling a sister :)
