Introducing our spring initiates

Alpha Mu was lucky to gain five new members during our first ever informal recruitment! We are so thankful to have them share in this sisterhood with us. You can find them anywhere on campus from the Newman Center, Omicron Delta Kappa’s Top 14 Freshmen, in the newsroom at KOMU, off campus at Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center or even working as the State Secretary for Missouri Future Farmers of America. Get to know them a little bit more below!

Name: Annabel Thorpe

Hometown: Argyle, Texas

Major: Journalism and Economics

What is your favorite thing you’re involved in outside of Theta?

Outside of Theta, I am very involved at KOMU, the NBC affiliate TV station, and in the RJI competition. I love working on the newscast for KOMU because journalism is my passion! I also love to make short documentaries. The RJI competition is a student pitch competition where students build a team of journalism, computer science, and business majors. Teams are required to come up with a technology product that helps any facet of journalism. My team made it to finals, so we are in the process of creating our product. Exciting/nerve-wracking times!

Tell us about your favorite vacation you’ve ever taken.

My favorite vacation I’ve ever been on was when I went to England my senior summer to see my family. All of my family lives in England, so I was able to spend time with them, as well as explore London and small towns in the countryside.

Who are your biggest role models in your life?

The biggest role models in my life are my mom and my two older brothers; I look to them for inspiration, encouragement, and as a guiding compass in my life.

My favorite Mizzou memory is…

My favorite Mizzou memory is initiation day at Theta. The entire day was filled with joy and Theta love! Through the process of chapter and Theta events, I have grown so close to my sisters, and that day truly signified how perfect Theta is. Sisterhood is amazing.

Theta is…

the most loving and accepting environment a girl could wish for. I was weary going into Greek life, but Theta defied all stereotypes. This sorority pushes academic and personal excellence. Every sister wants the others to succeed.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is to become an anchor for the Today Show.

What’s your favorite TV show and why?

My favorite TV show is the Newsroom or Gossip Girl. I love the Newsroom because (if you haven’t guessed yet) I am super passionate about journalism, and I love how the show portrays real aspects of newsrooms that journalists go through. Gossip Girl, I love it because it is so juicy! You just have to keep watching.

Where would you spend all your time if you could?

I would spend all of my time with my sorority sisters, family, or boyfriend. If not that, I’d spend my time in a news studio.

To me, sisterhood means…

understanding and appreciating every girl. It means creating a positive and uplifting environment for every sister to thrive and find home in. It means loving your sisters unconditionally and going out of your way to be there for them, encourage them, and help in any way you can.

Name: Maddie Brownfield

Major: Biochemistry

What is your favorite thing you’re involved in outside of Theta?

I’d have to say my favorite thing outside of Theta is being in Outreach at Mizzou. It’s brought me new friends in a lot of different organizations and greek organizations. It’s just been a really great and fun thing to get involved in, and it’s really great to talk to high school seniors and tell them how great Mizzou is.

Tell us about your favorite vacation you’ve ever taken.

I’m not sure if this counts as a vacation because it was for a class trip, but for my marine biology class my junior year of high school we took a trip at the end of the year to the Exumas in the Bahamas. It was hands down the greatest thing I’ve ever experienced. We went to that famous island with the swimming pigs, swam with sharks, and spent the week on a boat with no cell phones or technology, and it was amazing.

Who are your biggest role models in your life?

My mom is definitely my biggest role model. She went to Mizzou and majored in biochemistry, so I’m following in her footsteps and doing the same thing. I’ve always looked up to her, and we are very alike in our determined, hard-working nature.

My favorite Mizzou memory is…

My favorite Mizzou memory so far was after initiation when everyone in Theta was cheering for all of the new members. It made me feel so at home.

Theta is…

sisterhood. That’s so cheesy I know, but I’ve been here for only a few weeks, and I already feel like I’ve made friendships that will really last a lifetime. I love being a part of Theta, and I feel like I have such a strong sense of belonging. I love that everyone who is in Theta has the same type of determination and drive for success as I do. It’s really great to know that I have so many people who I know would be there for me through thick and thin.

What is your dream job?

Even though my major is biochemistry, my overall dream job would be to be a professional videographer. I love taking videos, and I just started a business out of it and started doing wedding videos. I absolutely love it.

What’s your favorite TV show and why?

My favorite TV show is New Girl. I just started it, but I think it’s hilarious and actually has a good plot. I’m obsessed.

Where would you spend all your time if you could?

I would spend all of my time filming with my friends if I could. I love making memories and being able to document them and put them together in ways that draw emotion and help others remember them as well.

To me, sisterhood means…

being there through thick and thin. I truly believe that Theta has brought me to people that will actually be there through the good times and the bad times, and I am so so so excited to be part of such a great sisterhood. I can’t wait to see all the new friendships and opportunities that Theta will bring to me.

What’s your favorite TV show and why?

Scandal because who DOESN’T want to be Olivia Pope?

Where would you spend all your time if you could?

Either laying on the beach reading somewhere or in New Orleans because it's a nonstop adventure.

To me, sisterhood means…

being able to be friends with women you may differ completely from, because of that wonderful and welcoming sister bond that Theta offers. Sisterhood is learning something from all of your sisters and being there for them whenever they need someone.
