SERVICE

As leading women, commitment to service is an important aspiration for our members. Service helps us to not only impact positive change in our community, but provides opportunities for us to strengthen relationships both within our chapter and with those we serve. As we strive to reach the widest influence of good in our community, we have a goal of each member completing 10 service hours per semester. To reach this goal, members participate in a wide range of service events throughout the year. For example, many members volunteer at local food banks and animal shelters with their sisters, while others volunteer on their own through various campus and community organizations, such as Adaptive Gymnastics and Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding. We are the first Greek organization at Mizzou to partner with Mizzou Alternative Breaks and send select members on a weekend trip each semester to serve various counties in Missouri. This year, we are also able to sponsor a miracle child as a part of Mizzouthon and had several members participate in the 13.1 hour dance marathon in March. The opportunities for service involvement are endless, and we strive to spark a passion for service within each member and encourage everyone to grow as an active citizen.

THETA ALTERNATIVE BREAK

Thanks to Mizzou Alternative Breaks, an organization on Mizzou's campus created to send students out to serve various communities in Missouri, the US and abroad, Kappa Alpha Theta is proud to be the first Greek organization to create a break just for the members of our chapter. For one weekend each semester, Theta selects a group of twelve members, lead by Thetas, to travel to one of Missouri's 114 counties and serve. Thetas have partnered with the Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, and various local charities to serve the citizens of Missouri.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We encourage our members to go out into the Columbia and Missouri community on their own to serve in whatever way they can, however we also organize service activities for members to participate in together. Members come together to serve the local food bank, humane society and to pick up trash on and off campus. Members independently serve Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding, STRIPES, Girls on the Run, Tiger Pantry, volunteering at various Columbia Public Schools and more. Members are also encouraged to sign up to facilitate tutoring sessions with  fellow, younger members.

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

Alpha Mu partners with Columbia's Russell Elementary School where we pair Thetas with teachers who are in need of some extra hands in the classroom. Thetas help provide more one-on-one attention for students to help improve their learning experience. Beyond the classroom, Thetas have attended parent day for students whose parents aren't able to attend, and they have helped put on a fall festival and a Santa breakfast so that parents can spend time with their children rather than volunteering to run the events. We also put on Russell University every year for the students where they can attend various special classes that aren't typically taught in the classroom.
